LIGHTS OF HOPE

This winter, Bank Street will shimmer with a magical glow as the Lights of Hope cast their light across Dumfries — tracing the riverside, gliding through Dock Park, and returning to the bustle of the Loreburn Centre at the town’s heart.

Framing the River Nith and the town’s bustling shopping streets, this new northern lights feature will transform familiar spots into a trail of light and warmth. As the Christmas lights fade and the dark nights settle in, the Lights of Hope will continue to shine — a gentle guide through the heart of Dumfries all the way until February. Designed to lift spirits and help people find their way safely through winter, these beams of light will remind us that even in the darkest months, hope still shines bright over our town. Supported by Dumfries Partnership Action Group, the project reflects a shared vision for a brighter, better future for Dumfries. Their ongoing commitment to revitalising the town and bringing people together has helped turn the Lights of Hope into more than just a display — it’s a symbol of community pride and optimism for what’s still to come.

Local funeral director Mark Jardine knows all too well the difference between light and darkness, life and death. His belief in the importance of light during the winter months is realised through the sponsorship of these bright LED bulbs, installed across some of the darker areas of the town centre.

Their placement in public spaces reflects a desire to use light as a symbol of healing, warmth, kindness and life itself. The sparkling bulbs above us are there to remind us of how strong our community is, how special this place is, and how important kinship between us all can be.They are called the Lights of Hope because they offer a shared sense of optimism and togetherness. Installed until February, they invite people to come together, bring a friend, and walk the light trail through the town over the winter months.
