DIVIDED
The Divided light installation explores the interplay of light and shadow, inviting visitors to experience its transformative nature.
Divided, which first appeared at the festival last year, takes place in an abdandoned night club. The piece uses mirrors and recreates an outside world inside with real grass and Christmas trees that the community donate. The piece explores the shifting view on immigration and asks the spectator to see themselves as others see them and immerses the audience into a sonic dystopia.
At the time this installation was created, there were many questions being asked in Dumfries around migration: who should be allowed to live here, and who shouldn’t?
Divided invites people to step onto the grass and realise that it may not always be greener. The mirrors encourage us to look at ourselves and question who we see reflected back.
The composer has helped create this feeling by distorting sound waves so they seem to travel around you in an uncontrollable way. The piece takes inspiration from the journey of a migrant who might end up living in a hotel room. While we may initially romanticise the idea of hotel living, the work instead focuses on the courage it takes to leave everything behind.
Lighting designer Dave Morris supports this idea through shifting colours that suggest things are not quite what they seem. This piece asks us to pause for a moment and consider what it must feel like to leave your home, and how it would feel to arrive somewhere you are not entirely welcome.
