FIREFLY
A dazzling light show will shoot jets of laser light into the sky on a soundscape of marine like sounds.
Based on the Fire Fly Squid found in the Toyama Bay of Japan, these squids emit a bright, flashing blue light and are a major tourist attraction.
This unique expeirence is created using the latest Laser technology which will be beamed out of the River Nith. Spectators will be able to view the piece from the Dock Park near the Bandstand.
In ancient Japanese tradition, fireflies reflected on water are said to bring prosperity to those lucky enough to see them.
Composer Finlay Keenan has created a soundscape that imagines the water dancing with fireflies. Lighting designer Dave Morris complements this by using laser technology to create a shimmering spectacle across the surface of the river.
The River Nith has been an important waterway in Dumfries for centuries. It was once used as a shipping route, and Robert Burns is known to have collected taxes from ships sailing upriver during his time as a government exciseman.
In recent years, the Nith has increasingly burst its banks, flooding the land that has settled around it. Whether the flood prevention scheme will work remains to be seen. Firefly offers a moment of pause and reflection, and a quiet wish for prosperity for those watching the lights dance on the water.
