SHOW MUST GO ON!
Suspended above the River Nith, the historic Suspension Bridge becomes a beacon of resilience and community spirit with its glowing message — “The Show Must Go On.”
Originally built in 1875 to help children cross safely to school, this much-loved landmark now carries a new purpose: to remind Dumfries that, no matter what challenges we face, life keeps moving when we stand together.
The illuminated sign is also a nod to the town’s legendary Rood Fair and the generations of fair people who have brought colour, energy, and joy to Dumfries through the years. It’s a bright tribute to the town’s enduring heart — a symbol of togetherness, tradition, and the spirit that refuses to fade.
Created by Martin O’Neill for the Stove Network.
This piece is by local artist Martin O’Neill from The Stove Network. Over the last few years, Martin has been exploring the heritage of the fair people of Dumfries and has uncovered a rich history of celebration and spectacle.
In particular, he has been drawn to the Rudefair and the impact it would have had on the town. At the time, it was a major event, and we are drawn to the parallels with Big Burns Supper today. Although times have changed, the festival continues to bring spectacle to a rural community and gives local people something to look forward to.
The The Show Must Go On signage reflects the theatrical nature of the fair movement and the experiences local people would have taken part in over 100 years ago. Its placement on the bridge reflects the belief that visiting fair people contributed to the construction of the Suspension Bridge.
